Greater Karachi Plan 1952

The Greater Karachi Plan 1952 was the first major urban planning initiative developed after Pakistan’s independence to manage the city’s rapid growth as the new capital. Prepared by the Swedish firm Merz Rendel Vatten, the plan aimed to address issues such as overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure, and unregulated development. It proposed organized zoning, expansion of road networks, development of residential and industrial zones, and improved public services. While visionary in scope, the plan faced implementation challenges due to limited funding, administrative hurdles, and shifting political priorities. Nonetheless, it laid a foundational framework for Karachi’s future urban development.
