ML-1 Upgradation – EIA Report

The Draft II EIA Report, dated September 2017, addresses the proposed upgradation and reconstruction of the Main Line (ML-1) railway corridor from Karachi to Peshawar. This large-scale infrastructure project aims to modernize Pakistan’s key railway artery, improve operational efficiency, reduce travel time, and enhance safety across one of the country’s most vital transport corridors. The report provides a detailed baseline of environmental, ecological, and social conditions along the ML-1 alignment.

Key components of the EIA include the identification of environmental impacts during both construction and operational phases, covering areas such as land acquisition, air and noise pollution, biodiversity, cultural heritage, and community displacement. The report also proposes mitigation strategies, an environmental management framework, and compliance mechanisms aligned with national and international environmental standards. This draft serves as an important tool for regulatory review, public consultation, and informed decision-making ahead of project implementation.
